President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under the Department of Defense. Armed Forces Day is observed on the third Saturday of May. Dozens of protesters are reported dead in Myanmar as junta leaders put on a show of strength for Armed Forces Day. Many of the victims were killed in the city of Mandalay. Earlier, a general warned anti-coup protesters they risked being shot in the head and back. Security forces have killed 300 people since pro-democracy rallies began in February. Those who came out to protest, knew they were risking their lives. The army said as much before Saturday's protests against Myanmar's military coup. Across the nation, soldiers opened fire, killing dozens of protesters, many shot in the head. Footage shows security forces beating an unarmed man unconscious. It's been one of the deadliest days since the army seized power in a coup. A show of force as the military holds a parade in the capital Naypyitaw. Thousands of soldiers flanked by rockets and tanks. Junta leader Min Aung Hlaing condemned the protests as terrorism and again promised there would be democratic elections. But no date has been set. Protests have not let up since the military coup at the beginning of February. Demonstrators are demanding the release of imprisoned civilian leader Aung Sung Suu Kyi. Hundreds are dead, thousands imprisoned. Neither side is backing down in this brutal power struggle. Facts and Information Armed Forces Day Parade 2016 color guardTorrance is one of few cities nationwide sanctioned by the Department of Defense to honor our Armed Forces through an annual Armed Forces Day Parade & Celebration. Torrance's Armed Forces Day Parade has the distinction of being the nation's longest running military parade sponsored by any city. Last year's celebration brought approximately 60,000 people to crowd the Parade route. Torrance's celebration takes place the third weekend in May, and lasts from Friday through Sunday. The 60th Annual Armed Forces Day Parade took place on Saturday, May 18, 2019. The parade began at 1:30 p.m. at Crenshaw Boulevard and travels one-mile west on Torrance Boulevard to Madrona Avenue.
