In this easy Arduino Tutorial we are going to learn how to create a Menu on a Nokia 5110 LCD display. We are using an Arduino Uno today but you can use any Arduino you like. Let's get started! This is the project we are going to build. In the display a simple menu appears, and with the help of three buttons I can navigate up, or down and select a menu item. Let's select the first option. As you can see a new a UI screen is displayed and by pressing the up and down buttons we can change the contrast of the display. If we press the middle button again, we go back to the main UI screen. If we now select the second menu item and press the middle button we can turn the backlight of the display on or off. Lastly if we navigate to the last menu item we can reset the settings for the display to the default values. Of course this is just a demonstration project, you can modify it to build your own more complex menus if you wish. 06 A simple Arduino menu for a LCD


Step by Step: 🤍 Today we are hooking up a LCD screen and controlling a LED all with a simple Menu program. We will need the following Some Jumper wires Some Buttons (I'm using a 4 by 1 Button Membrane) 1 x LCD Screen, (I'm using the LMB162ABC 5v LCD) 2 x 220 ohm resistors 1 x 1 ohm resistor 1 x LED A Breadboard and An Arduino As I always do, I connect ground from the Arduino to Negative Rail And Connect 5v of the Arduino to the 5v Rail I'm going to start with the LCD Section The LMB162ABC has 16 pins. Pin 1 and 16 are numbered. Place the LCD onto the Breadboard, (You might need to solder header pins onto your LCD screen first) Place a lead from the Ground rail to pin 1 of the LCD Connect pin 2 of the LCD to the Positive rail of the breadboard Place 1 x 220 Ohm resistor between pin 3 and 1 of the LCD screen (This controlls the Contrast of the screen) Connect pins 10, 11 and 12 of the Arduino to pins 6, 5 and 4 of the LCD Pins 4, 5 and 6 on the LCD are RS, R/W and Enable for the LMB162ABC (If you are using an LCD other than the LMB162ABC search for the datasheet of your LCD to get the pin Numbering) Connect pins 2,3,4 and 5 of the Arduino to pins 14, 13, 12 and 11 of the LCD These are the Data pins of the LCD Pin 15 and pin 16 of the LCD control the back light. Connect pin 16 to Ground Connect a 1ohm Resistor from the Positive rail to a terminal strip (I used an online calculator to get the value of the resistor using the figures from the LCD datasheet) Connect pin 15 of the LCD to the terminal strip with the 1 ohm resistor Next section we will tackle is the one LED. Place the led between 2 terminal strips Place a resistor from the Anode to another Terminal Strip Conect pin 9 of the arduino to the Resistor Connect the Cathode of the LED to a negative rail Let's connect the 4 button Membrane I am only going to use 3 of the buttons Connect a lead from the common pin of the membrane to the Ground of the Arduino I am going to use pin mode INPUT PULLUP for the buttons so I do not require Resistors The pins 1, 2, 3 , 4 and 5 on the membrane that I have, correspond to buttons 2, 1, 4, 3 and Ground Connect 3 other leads from the membrane to pins 6, 7 and 8 of the Arduino Plug in your arduino to your Worksation and Let's head over to the arduino IDE I designed this menu program to easily edit and execute code where required While the Sketch is Verifying and Uploading lets look at the Flow diagram of the Program When a button is pressed It will either Navigate the Menu or Execute code In this Example the Execute part will Controll the LED Turning the LED: ON, OFF, Fading the LED or Blinking the LED In the Navigate Section It Figures out where you are in the menu Finds possible places you can navigate to Then allows you to choose where you can navigate to, using the buttons Instead of the numbers on the button Membrane I stuck masking tape labels to assist with navigation Now I can controll the LEDs function using the menu program. You could easily modify the Execute code Section of the Sketch to do Whatever you like and You could also easily modify the menu array to suite your requirements I know this program is not Memory efficient but it works well with small menus and is easy to understand and edit.

Advanced menu system with rotary encoder for Arduino/STM32


In this video I show you my improved menu system for Arduino/STM32. The code works on both microcontroller thanks to the STM32duino. By using a rotary encoder and a button, we can navigate on the display (20x4 LCD) and select a menu, then modify the value of a variable based on the selected menu. This will be useful for my future projects where I need to set up different target values and perform something based on the values. The 20x4 LCD allows us more freedom as the 16x2 LCD. Arduino LCD 16x2 interactive menu + rotary encoder WITH CODE


All of the libraries i found for creating menu's on arduino were to difficult and i didnt understand them. So this is my effort to create a menu system for Arduino combined with an LCD. My LCD is a i2c version. The menu allows unlimited levels, and allows you to change numeric values but also text values defined in an array. The menu works with a rotary encoder that acts differently based upon single and double clicks. For example double click is return to 1st level. Values can be changed to a maximum and minimum. You can also set the amount of increments. The code is very rough, and the method used im sure can be way more efficient. It uses up 50% of the resources on an Arduino UNO. I tried to comment as much of the code. Please note that this code also writes to the serial monitor. You DONT need an LCD to run this. The serial monitor i used for debugging purposes. The download package includes all the libraries and the code. DOWNLOAD LINK: 🤍 TODO Store the values selected in the menu within the EEPROM. But thats planned for later. WIRING LCD i2c, pin A4 and A5 Rotary button, pin 8 Rotary DT, pin 2 Rotary CLK, pin 4 You can change these pins in the code.

I always wanted to find out a display similar to the display my 3D printer uses because it is big and inexpensive so it can be very useful for many projects. Arduino LCD Menu Code: 🤍 About the hardware debouncing: I'm using 10uF electrolytic caps and 10k resistors (for a 0.1s decay time) as well as an Inverting Schmitt trigger to "smooth out" the decay curve. (Actually converts it from a smooth curve into a square wave which is a much better input signal for the arduino digital pins. It also inverts the signal so you'll have to account for that in your code or your hw setup.) Arduino LCD Menu Code: 🤍 About the hardware debouncing: I'm using 10uF electrolytic caps and 10k resistors (for a 0.1s decay time) as well as an Inverting Schmitt trigger to "smooth out" the decay curve. (Actually converts it from a smooth curve into a square wave which is a much better input signal for the arduino digital pins. It also inverts the signal so you'll have to account for that in your code or your hw setup.) Here is a schematic for using this kind of HW debounce with an arduino interrupt pin: old broken link - sorry, I don't have the schematic anymore (The cap in this is 10uF and the 40106N is the Inverting Schmitt trigger) I got the Schmitt triggers here (this IC has 6 triggers): 🤍
