Diaper Rash Dos & Don’ts

Very few, if any, children make it out of diapers without this irritating problem: diaper rash. It can range from uncomfortable to painful. “One in four children actually see a pediatrician or a physician for that problem, usually between the ages of zero and three years of age,” says Dr. Anthony Pietroniro, who is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. Diaper rash is caused by the skin being exposed to moisture for long periods. In most cases it clears up in 2 or 3 days. When it comes to treatments; there are dos and don’ts that can make a difference to your bottom line. First the don’ts: don’t be fooled by ultra-absorbent diapers. Although they do pull moisture away from the skin, they still need to be changed frequently. “When a baby’s diaper is getting wet and heavy it’s definitely time to change it. Try not to let the baby’s skin be in contact with urine or with stool,” says Dr. Pietroniro. And don’t over use baby powder and wipes. What you think may be soothing, could actually be irritating. “I, as a pediatrician, discourage using powders or cornstarch for preventing or treating diaper rash because that can be inhaled into the lungs. When changing a diaper it’s best not to use the wipes that you can buy in the store. What works really nicely is just warm water and a soft towel. And it’s best to blot-dry the skin and not to rub the skin,” says Dr. Pietroniro. Now the dos: proper over-the-counter products can provide protection for your baby’s bum. “If the area is becoming really red, inflamed - apply an ointment that contains zinc oxide or even petroleum jelly because that creates a barrier to prevent the skin from getting further irritated,” says Dr. Pietroniro. And do let your baby go au natural- nothing is better for diaper rash than fresh air. “When the baby is napping lay the baby on a towel and take the diaper off so that the bottom can air out,” says Dr. Pietroniro. Finally, treat diaper rash with the same care you give your baby- a little TLC goes a long way. Get my FREE pregnancy updates: 🤍 My natural pregnancy book: 🤍 How to Treat Diaper Rash Naturally (& What Causes It): 🤍 What Causes Diaper Rash? It’s simple… While there are many reasons, essentially something is irritating the skin. Let’s unpack what could be causing this irritation and how to fix it. #1 Heat and Chafing The irritation can simply be due to the heat and baby’s thighs rubbing or chaffing their skin. If you notice the rash is basically in the skin creases around their bottom and inner thighs, this is your clue that chafing is the culprit. What’s the solution? Going diaper free to let the skin air out and heal. Or, you can use a thick ointment like X on the skin to prevent the chaffing. Once healed, you can stop using. #2 Chemicals Another reason for the diaper rash could simply be from chemicals in the diaper or diaper wipes. What is the solution? If you are using disposables diapers and wipes, try switching brands. Get a natural diaper like Earth’s Best, Bambo Nature, Honest, and Seventh Generation are all pure brands on the market. They also make fragrance free wipes without chemicals and fragrances. If you use cloth diapers, baby could be reacting from the laundry detergent you are using. Get rid of any fabric softeners or scented laundry soaps. Baby’s skin is super sensitive! Try Molly’s Suds, Seventh Generation or X to clean your diapers. You also may want to strip your diaper to release any stored ammonia. I have videos on cloth diapers and stripping diapers you can check out. # 3 Ammonia Speaking of chemicals, a major reason for diaper rash is because baby is staying too long in the same diaper, especially overnight. The ammonia in the urine is very harsh on baby’s skin. What is the solution? Until the rash heals, change baby in middle of night. Or, find a more absorbent diaper for nightime. Also, be sure you are changing baby’s diaper every 2-3 hours or so, especially after a bowel movement, while they have an acute rash. You can use simple coconut oil on the rash which helps to heal the skin mantle. Finally, a baking soda bath can be super healing with issues of ammonia. To use, mix a few tablespoons into a warm bath and soak baby’s bottom for about 15 minutes once a day. #4 Food reactions If your baby is on solids, he or she may be reacting to a new food. What is the solution? Cut out any newer foods and apply diluted raw apple cider vinegar to the rash and seal with coconut oil. You also may want to cut out any inflammatory foods like cow dairy, gluten, soy and corn as well as acidic foods like oranges or tomatoes. Slowly add back in any new food and watch for a reaction. #5 Bacteria or Yeast Occasionally, you could be dealing with a bacterial or yeast infection. Yeast rash looks different from regular diaper rash and can be harder to get rid of. This type of rash is really red, inflamed, and often looks like well-defined patches bordered by raised edges. And… it doesn’t go away with most diaper rash treatments. What is the solution? A zinc based diaper cream like X, cod liver oil or plain yogurt or kefir applied to the rash are some good options here. While some moms like to use baby powder or breast milk to heal rashes, this is actually going to feed yeast so avoid these options. You want to also focus on baby’s overall gut health and start administering infant probiotics with your doctor’s approval. You can even make a diaper cream paste with coconut oil, which is antibacterial, and mix in your infant probiotic powder. Rub on baby’s behind several times a day. If that doesn’t do the trick, colloidal silver or a nystatin cream prescribed by your baby’s doctor may be needed.

Diaper Rash or Nappy Rash. This video is on treatment, remedies, causes, fungal and cream to get rid of diaper rash. Whether you call it Nappy or Diaper rash their both the same thing and it affects 1 in 3 babies. In this video I’m going to teach you everything you need to know to get rid of it. WHAT IS NAPPY RASH: Nappy rash is a skin inflammation. Most cases are due to a reaction of the skin to urine and poo. There may be red patches on your baby's bottom, or the whole area may be red. Their skin may look sore and feel hot to touch, and there may be spots, pimples or blisters. Most babies with mild nappy rash don't feel sore, but if the rash is severe your baby may feel uncomfortable and be distressed. In addition, a germ called candida commonly thrives on the inflamed skin. Candida can cause a more inflamed rash which is a brighter or darker red. Sometimes the rash can also become infected with other types of germs called bacteria. This will also make the rash more red and sore. Nappy rash can occur or worsen when your baby is teething. For images please visit: 🤍 NAPPY RASH CAUSES: Nappy rash can be caused by: • Your baby's skin being in contact with wee or poo for a long time the nappy rubbing against your baby's skin • Not cleaning the nappy area or changing the nappy often enough • Soap, detergent or bubble bath • Alcohol-based baby wipes • Your baby recently taking antibiotics NAPPY RASH TREATMENT: If your baby gets nappy rash, you can usually treat their skin yourself: If the rash isn't upsetting your baby, at each nappy change apply a thin layer of a barrier cream to protect their skin. Ask your health visitor or pharmacist to recommend one. Follow this advice to help look after your baby's skin. • Change wet or dirty nappies as soon as possible. • Clean the whole nappy area gently but thoroughly, wiping from front to back. Use water or fragrance-free and alcohol-free baby wipes. Read more about how to clean your baby - 🤍 • Bath your baby daily – but avoid bathing them more than twice a day as that may dry out their skin. • Dry your baby gently after washing them – avoid vigorous rubbing. • Lie your baby on a towel and leave their nappy off for as long and as often as you can to let fresh air get to their skin. • Do not use soap, bubble bath, or lotions. • Do not use drying powders as it contains ingredients that could irritate your baby's skin and may even be breathed in. Nappy rash usually clears up after about 3 days if you follow these hygiene tips. If the rash is causing your baby discomfort, your health visitor or pharmacist can recommend a nappy rash cream to treat it. STEROID CREAM: Useful link on how to apply and how much to use: 🤍 OTHER RASHES ON BABIES: If the rash doesn't go away or your baby develops a persistent bright red, moist rash with white or red pimples that spreads into the folds of their skin, they may have an infection. Ask your pharmacist or health visitor for advice. The pharmacist may recommend a cream for you to use. If the rash is severe, take your baby to the GP who may prescribe cream or medicine. Follow your GP's instructions on whether and when to apply barrier cream as well as the prescribed cream. It's normal for babies to develop skin rashes, but it's important to know the difference between a minor irritation and a condition that requires attention. A lot of parents want to know what they can do for diaper rash. And it's actually a very common newborn issue. If you've noticed, when you're changing your baby's diaper, that the area is a little bit red and it's limited to the diaper area, then it very well could be a diaper rash. And a baby's skin is very sensitive, it's thinner than ours, and it's just more prone to irritation. So there's a few different things that can cause diaper rash. The first is just irritation from the contents of the diaper, the urine and the stool. So change your baby's diaper frequently. In the beginning, it can be normal to go through 8 to 12 diapers a day, because your baby will eat and then poop, and then eat and then poop, and you don't want them to sit in that. So as soon as you know that they've had a bowel movement, then change their diaper. Other causes of diaper rash can be bacterial or fungal, so it could be a yeast infection. The first thing you can try is airing your baby's diaper area out. So change their diaper frequently, like I mentioned before, and wash the area with warm water. Avoid using wipes that are scented or have alcohol in them, because they will only irritate the area. So just use warm water and a clean cloth, and after you've changed your baby's diaper, let it air dry for a little bit. And some parents even let their babies just nap on a towel so that that area can be fully exposed for a little while. And after a few days of watching this and doing this, in most cases, the rash will go away on its own. If you feel like your baby is having such frequent bowel movements that you can't keep up with it, or if they develop diarrhea, then you can use a barrier cream. Basically, it's like petroleum jelly. There's lots of different types out on the market. But if you put it on their skin, then it will act as a barrier and help to protect their skin while it heals. There'a also a ton of different diaper rash ointments over-the-counter that you can get, and the main ingredient is zinc oxide. That's what acts as a barrier and allows the skin to heal, so that's the main ingredient you're looking for. If you notice that these things haven't helped after 3 days, then you should call your pediatrician. Call them sooner than that if you notice that the area is weeping, or it's oozing, it's bleeding, if your baby develops a fever, or the rash seems to be spreading outside of the diaper area. At that point, they need to be evaluated by the doctor, because it could very well be something that's more serious than a diaper rash. And the doctor will perform an exam and decide what needs to be done at that point. Dealing with Diaper Rash

Virtually every child gets it, meaning most every parent will deal with it. But there are good practices to prevent or deal with diaper rash. “Diaper rash really starts as an irritation to the skin and it’s caused by contact with moisture, says Dr. Anthony Pietroniro. The bottom line is to keep baby’s bottom clean and dry; changing diapers frequently. Dr. Anthony Pietroniro is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. It’s not just soggy diapers; he says even splash time can lead to rash time. “Anytime the skin is wet or exposed to any kind of moisture that can become potentially irritating. So taking your baby to a pool, taking your baby to the beach, all potentially can result in a diaper rash,” says Dr. Pietroniro. Diaper rash should resolve in a few days. In the meantime there are things you can do to make baby more comfortable. Many doctors advise skipping the baby powder, which can cause respiratory issues. Instead they suggest sticking to a soft cloth or alcohol-free wipes to soothe the skin. If irritation is really bad you can double-down with ointment. “If the area is becoming really red, inflamed, apply an ointment that contains zinc oxide. Or even petroleum jelly because that creates a barrier to prevent the skin from getting further irritated,” says Dr. Pietroniro. A final thought is to let your baby air-dry occasionally, so skin can dry naturally. “When the baby is napping lay the baby on a towel and take the diaper off so that the bottom can air out,” says Dr. Pietroniro. These tips may take some of the sting out of a very common diaper dilemma. Full Playlist: 🤍 - - Like these Baby Care Tips !!! Check out the official app 🤍 Watch more Baby Care Tips videos: 🤍 Step 1: Change more often Most rashes happen because of moisture trapped against skin. So the first step toward clearing one up is to change your baby's diaper more often – at least every two hours or so, as well as the minute you realize that it may be wet or soiled. Tip Disposable diapers tend to be better at keeping rashes at bay than cloth ones. If you use cloth, but your baby's rash-prone, consider using disposables overnight. Step 2: Clean the area Urine and poop left behind can make rashes worse, so clean the diaper area thoroughly at every change. Use unscented wipes, without any added ingredients that could further irritate skin, and use unscented, alcohol-free soap during baths. Tip Sometimes a warm, damp washcloth can be less irritating than wipes. You can also fill a squeeze bottle with warm water, squirt some on your child's bottom, and use cotton balls to wipe. Step 3: Pat – don't rub No matter what you wipe with, pat – don't rub! – your baby's bottom. Step 4: Apply cream Once your baby's bottom is completely dry, smooth a visible layer of rash cream with zinc oxide over the affected area. The cream will form a barrier between the rash and the next barrage of pee or poop. Diaper your baby as usual. Tip Don't use baby powder or cornstarch. They can cause a yeast infection, which can make a diaper rash worse. Step 5: Expose it to air If you have time, let your baby go bare-bottomed for a while during the day on several layers of soft towels. The fresh air will help heal their rash. Step 6: Prevent a recurrence Once the rash has cleared, keep a new one from cropping up by continuing to change your baby frequently and watching what they eat. Some rashes are food-related, so watch for connections between foods and flare-ups. Step 7: Dress them right When you dress your baby, don't use plastic pants, which trap heat and cause a rash or make a rash worse. Now that your baby feels better, don't you do too? Did You Know? Did you know? Breastfed babies tend to have fewer diaper rashes than formula-fed ones.

How can I treat severe diaper rash?

If your baby is having issues with diaper rash, here are a few things to try. First of all, instead of using wipes (which, in most cases, have alcohol in them and can be very irritating to their skin), use a washcloth and either cold or warm water, and pat-dry instead of wiping dry. It's also best, if you can, to leave the diaper off for a few minutes and let their little bum totally air-dry before you put the diaper back on. If needs be, you can get your blow dryer, and put it on the cool setting (making sure that it's not hot and going to burn them), and totally dry out their little bum before putting the diaper back on. In a lot of cases, this may be what they need for just a few days to get rid of the diaper rash. Creams are also very helpful too, though. You want anything that has zinc oxide in it, because this is the ingredient that acts as a barrier to the skin and will allow it to heal. Most diaper rashes are caused by either stool or urine in the diaper, so if you put a barrier cream on, a lot of times it can heal. But zinc oxide is the main ingredient - the thicker the better. If it's a creamy ointment, then chances are it's just going to run off in the diaper and it won't stay on the baby's skin. Once the diaper rash is healed, then maybe your baby has really sensitive skin and you may have to use some sort of barrier cream with every change to prevent a diaper rash from occurring again. If these basic things have not helped your baby's diaper rash, then I recommend calling the doctor, because, in some cases, they prescribe other ointments such as steroid creams, or sometimes when they're really bad, sometimes babies need burn cream to help let the diaper rash heal. Good luck. I hope these things help you, and if you have any other questions for me, feel free to ask them on our Facebook page, and recommend us to your friends and family too.

Dr. Paul's FACEBOOK: 🤍 TWITTER: 🤍 WEB SITE: 🤍 MUSIC BY CASTA: (Facebook: 🤍 DIAPER RASHES IN BABIES & INFANTS Diaper rash can be caused by a burning of the skin from the ammonia in the urine or acidity of the stool. The majority of diaper rashes are just in the contact-surfaces where the stool or urine has had contact with the skin. Barrier creams work great to prevent the stool or urine from having direct contact with the skin. Use the white diaper creams with zinc and apply it during every diaper change. Apply generously, like frosting. The second most common rash is from yeast or Candida. Little babies may also have thrush (white on the gums, cheeks, and tongue). The Candida rash is typically in the creases of the thighs, around the anus, and for girls, also in the vaginal creases. I recommend that you alternate two different anti-fungal creams, one each diaper change. This will help to avoid the resistance that some yeast has developed to anti-fungals. The final form of diaper rash is very rare. This is a peri-anal strep infection, and occurs in less than 1% of diaper rashes. Just like you can get strep throat, babies on rare occasions can get a strep infection around their anus. This rash tends to be beefy-red and will require a visit to your doctor for antibiotics.
