Iran's Revolutionary Guards fired ballistic and cruise missiles on Tuesday during war games in the Gulf. State TV reported to have destroyed a target "with 100 percent precision". These war games come amid heightened tensions with the United States and Israel over possible Israeli plans to target Iranian nuclear sites. "The use of ballistic missiles by the Revolutionary Guards' navy is a new concept ... and they hit their targets with 100% precision," Guards chief General Hossein Salami told the broadcaster. Iran says its ballistic missiles have a range of 2,000 km (1,200 miles) and are capable of reaching arch-foe Israel and U.S. bases in the region. On Monday, Iran warned of a "crushing" response to any move against it by Israel, which opposes efforts by world powers to revive Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal and has long threatened military action if diplomacy fails to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear bomb. Iran says its nuclear ambitions are peaceful. Israel is widely believed to be the only Middle Eastern country with a nuclear arsenal. The exercises also included the simultaneous firing of five cruise missiles and the launch of armed drones capable of hitting two targets each, Iranian media reported. The five-day drills began on Monday. A dozen ballistic missiles launched from outside Iraq struck the country's northern Kurdish regional capital Erbil on Sunday, Kurdish officials said, adding there were no casualties. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for the missiles that struck Erbil, Iran's state media reported, adding that the attack was against Israeli "strategic centers" in the city. U.S. forces stationed at Erbil's international airport complex have in the past been targeted by rocket and drone attacks that U.S. officials blame on Iran-aligned militia groups, but no such attacks have occurred for several months. Iraq and neighboring Syria are regularly the scene of violence between the United States and Iran. Iran possesses the largest and most diverse missile arsenal in the Middle East. Subscribe Now - ⚔️ 🤍 ⚔️ With thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles, some capable of striking as far as Israel and southeast Europe. For the past decade, Iran has invested significantly to improve these weapons’ precision and lethality. Such developments have made Iran’s missile forces a potent tool for Iranian power projection and a credible threat to U.S. and partner military forces in the region. Iran has not yet tested or deployed a missile capable of striking the United States, but continues to hone longer-range missile technologies under the auspices of its space-launch program. Iran is also a major hub for weapons proliferation, supplying partner/proxy groups such as Hezbollah and Syria’s al-Assad regime with a steady supply of missiles and rockets, as well as local production capability. Since 2015, Iran has provided Yemen’s Houthi rebels with increasingly advanced ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as long-range unmanned aerial vehicles. Most recently, Iran has been equipping Shiite militia groups in Iraq with rockets and other small projectiles for use against Iraqi and U.S. military and diplomatic facilities. The Iranian missile program began during the so-called War of the Cities during which Iraq began deliberately attacking civilian targets in Iran. Iran struck back at the United States for the killing of a top Iranian general early Wednesday, firing a series of ballistic missiles at two Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops in a major escalation that brought the two longtime foes closer to war. Qassem Soleimani, whose death last week in an American drone strike near Baghdad prompted angry calls to avenge his slaying. A U.S. official said there were no immediate reports of American casualties, though buildings were still being searched. More: 🤍 Check out more Eyewitness News - 🤍 NEW HERE? – Hi! Iran's military began its annual air defence exercises on Wednesday with a display of ground-to-air missile systems. Dubbed 'Modafean Aseman Velayat' (Defenders of Velayat Skies) the drills were designed to test missile, radar and reconnaissance systems and would involve fighter jets, bombers and drones, especially home-manufactured equipment, the West Asian News Agency (WANA) reported. On Saturday Iran said it was self-reliant in its defence and had no need to go on a weapons-buying spree as a United Nations conventional arms embargo was about to expire, despite strong U.S. opposition.
