Big bad articulated streamers are a ton of fun when the browns are on the hunt.. Watching any size trout suck down your massive foam dry fly can be enough to drive a man insane.. A tiny rock dwelling worm is not glamourous.. and is certainly not flashy.. But every angler needs to have a Midge or two in your box! These are my three favorite Midge patterns to represent the three major stages in this little bugs lifecycle. Tying the midge pupa, midge emerger, and midge fly are all fairly simple and extremely effective. These are my go to patterns for winter time fishing or if I were to stumble upon a cheeky tailwater. What Patterns do you like to tie up? Let us know! Official FAS Discord: 🤍 Instagram: fly_allszn Materials: -Crystal Flash (any color) -Ultra wire (Silver) -Grizzly Hackle (To match hook) -60 Degree hook (18-22) -Emerger hook (18-22)
The Matts Midge is really effective for tailwater trout who are very picky with size and look of flies. These things really do look like little midges flying around. I even once had one fall out of my box and landed on my waders without my knowledge, I looked down later and instantly grabbed for my dry flies thinking the midges were hatching. LOL. They are excellent little flies that perfectly mimic a tiny midge. I regularly tie these from size 20-26. I have been known to tie down to 28, but thats as far as I go. I do know a couple brave souls with better eyes than I have, that tie them down to a size 30. So they can be tied small, and this is important when fishing picky tailwater trout. For instance at the San Juan river. This river has trout that are willing to come up and nip at your waders, however will refuse a fly sized 22 if they are targeting size 24. They have learned that they cannot get away from humans on this river, but they can pick and choose what size (and look) of fly they bite. These little matts midges fool them quite often, more often than other dry flies I have seen on that river. And best thing of all, they are one of the easiest dry flies to tie. Midges are small, at least the vast majority of them are. Especially in western tail waters like the San Juan river. I have had to fish down to size 30 hook to get fish to strike, however at that size, it becomes very difficult to land these large fish. But this is luckily a fairly easy fly to tie, and one that makes it possible to tie down to a size 30 (even 32 if you can find the hooks). Midge pupa have a ribbed looking abdomen, and a thick head that encases their wings and legs. These little midges will start to emerge most days on rivers, and become a very stable food source for trout. One of the most abundant bugs on the river, their small size makes up for in such large quantities. So trout naturally will open up for one of these floating near them, and usually (as long as you are tying the right size) will not question eating such an easy meal. Drag these behind a heavier nymph to get it down, and let this bounce around behind it, looking like a pupa trying to swim to the surface. The Cream Midge Larva, it's a no-frills, nothing special fly. A white abdomen and a black thorax make for an incredible fish catching machine year-round on Colorado tailwaters and freestones in late fall through early spring. You can crank them out by the hundreds with white thread and a black sharpie, but I got sick of the same old, so I dressed it up just a touch for our local Animas River. Tie a few of these up next time you head to your local tailwater and see what the trout think. Hook: Curved pupa hook in your favorite flavor in sizes 16 to 26. Massacre Midge Blog-Post & Recipe: In this week’s episode of Tying Tuesdays, watch as Max ties the Massacre Midge! I'm pretty confident that this fly will work anywhere in the world. Fish it deep, fish it as a dropper, I don't think it really matters. This fly can imitate a variety of emerging insects. The Massacre Midge created by Matt McCannel has climbed to the top of the list as one of my favorite patterns in Colorado. It can be tied in a variety of different colors with different colored foams. This fly has a lot of "buggyness" when you rough up the dubbing a little bit, making it very dynamic to your fishing situation. The Tungsten Crystal Midge is an extension of the popular Zebra Midge. I fish this pattern in sizes 16 down to 22 and use a little Solarez Bonedry to coat the body of the fly for durability. The Tungsten Crystal Midge is a great choice for pressured water either river or still water. Use a bead head and thread that is sized to the hook you are using. One the smallest flies I use 70d Ultrathread because it lays flat. I prefer the UNI-French oval tinsel, but a silver wire works great as well. The Krystal Flash Midge Emerger is one of the more simple emerger patterns for trout. This midge emerger is really effective despite using only 3 materials. Krystal flash, thread and wire. Tied like a zebra midge, but with an emerging wing. These are one of my favorite midge flies for picky trout in rivers. Its so easy to tie, I can make up 20 of them, and don't mind too much if I loose some due to small tippet. BUY MATERIALS ONLINE: 🤍 The Blood Midge is a great fly for winter trout fishing. Trout love red from some reason and they regularly respond to flies with red in them. Blood Midges exist in every river and lake. In lakes they are called Chironomids. In rivers they are much smaller and are just plain midges. Blood Midges are usually very small. Common sizes are #18-24. Blood Midges are only red in their larva form. Once they begin to turn into an adult, they lose their red coloring. Blood Midge Recipe: Hook: #18-24 Tiemco 2487 Thread: Fl.
